Boo and the Little Boy
2010-07-04
Last Sunday Ashley, the birds and I were at a "meet and greet" event in Piedmont. Our western screech owl and I were chatting with guests. I noticed a fellow about age 6 missing his two front teeth. You know the kind of kid he was...bright, articulate, but a little withdrawn until he was sure it was ok to converse with this lady and the owl.

Pet Walk 2010
2010-05-05
Every year the National American University Vet Tech Club hosts a Pet Walk in Memorial Park. We always try to attend, and give a program for the pet walkers. The WIND this year really cut into attendance, but the dog owners and dogs that were there bundled up and enjoyed themselves.

Icarus and humans
2010-04-22
Three of us stood quietly this morning, discussing division of the day's work. We were quite close to the path that staff walks from the overnight mew to the weathering mew. Becky and Icarus appeared around the corner and headed our way. They had to pass us to reach their destination.

Red-tailed Jays?
2010-04-04
I stepped out of the food prep room Saturday afternoon, headed for the rehab storage shed. I heard the scream of a red-tailed hawk over my right shoulder, and fairly close. I looked up to find the raptor and kept looking...... and looking.

Icarus continued
2010-03-04
Our owl's progress is truly remarkable. Icarus can now be carried out of his mew on a gloved hand and be taken 15-20 feet before he tries to fly away.

Icarus in training
2009-12-10
Icarus the Great Horned Owl is working towards his new role as an education bird, albeit with some reluctance. I can't say I blame him. Why should humans be trusted by a wild predator?

Trading
2009-11-27
The flock is going to change again. I am experiencing a mixture of sadness and delightful anticipation as I look forward to the next two weeks. We will be receiving a Senegal Coucal in trade for our Australian Silver Gull. Gull has not responded well to groups of people, even in small numbers. It has made it difficult for us to find a way to continue to make use of his presence in our group of educational birds. Thus, we are sending him to a new home in the next week or so, where he will help to build a breeding flock of Australian Silvers. No longer will he experience what as humans we call "anxiety" every time he is asked to go on stage or to a classroom.

The Fury of Owls
2009-04-04
Our pair of breeding Tawny Owls (Strix aluco) are a gentle duo. They live in the "outback" section of our facility, where it is quiet and their neighbors are few. I am sure they see more deer and turkeys per week than humans.

Blizzards
2009-04-01
Rapid City is shoveling out from under a foot of heavy, wet spring snow. This is the second blizzard in the course of seven days, and we are all quite tired of the repeated snows and winds.
