Program Descriptions:
The Web Of Life
Students learn about the interconnectedness of animals and food chains. A variety of animals – and usually a hands-on activity – will be used to illustrate the basic principles of Ecology.
Endangered Environments
In this program students will “visit” three different habitats and meet animals from each one. Presenters will discuss how each habitat is unique and why it (and the animals within it) are endangered. Focus is on allowing students to problem-solve and discuss ideas of what we can do to prevent the loss of these areas.
Africa, The Amazon, The Pacific Rim and North American Prairie-
All of these programs are interdisciplinary, including some map-reading and discussions of the wildlife and people of each region. We recommend that you choose one that fits with your class’s discussion topics, or – better yet – schedule two or three of them during the school year to give your students a broader view of the world. Our presenter will tailor these programs to fit the students’ grade-level. Animals may include parrots, snakes, turtles, raven, fennec fox and many others.
What’s Wild
A special program for the younger students, our presenter will discuss the difference between wild and domestic animals as well as what to do if you come across a strange animal. Animals may include snake, rat, dog, parrot, turtle and others.
Unloved and Sometimes Scary Animals
This program is designed especially for the weeks preceeding Halloween. It includes “gross,” “creepy,” and “disliked” animals from around the world. Examples are giant cockroaches and millipedes, a vulture, snakes and toads. The theme of the program is that, despite the fact that we may think some animals are creepy, they still have a place in the environment and deserve respect. This is always a popular presentation with the students.
Animal Adaptations
This program is for all ages and includes a variety of live animals. We discuss what special characteristics each animal has to live in its special habitat andwhat the animal does to survive. This program challenges students to observe and to think about animals in their own environment and then to think about humans and our special adaptations.
And remember, through the generosity of Black Hills Power we are able to offer as many as 150 free presentations in the following towns: Rapid City, Black Hawk, Piedmont, Keystone, Hill City, Custer, Deadwood, Lead, Edgemont, Hot Springs, Sturgis, Spearfish, Whitewood, Belle Fourche, Newell, PLUS: Newcastle, Osage, and Upton, Wyoming.
