Maggie Engler joined WEI as the Executive Director in May 2008. She has 25 years experience in environmental education, fundraising and administration. She has worked at a rehab facility in Wisconsin, and is an ardent birder and all-round naturalist

Becky Svalstad joined WEI in October 2002. She now serves as our General Curator. She cares for and trains all our animal ambassadors on a daily basis. She is our summer show leader, and gives a fabulous presentation. Becky also is our raptor rehab specialist.

Julia Avison became part of the team in January 2009. Julia’s role is as our Lead Educator. She gives the majority of our school and youth group programs. She also helps present the summer shows. Julia has a lot of raptor experience, and is now learning all about parrots.

We found Shanna Iburg through National American University’s vet tech program. She started working in March 2008 and has stayed with us despite a rigorous college program. Shanna is an enormous help with the rehab efforts, including helping rear a very tiny kestrel this summer.

Christi Bubac joined us in June 2009, and her smile lights up the place! She is applying to vet schools, with the intent to begin that part of her life in the autumn of 2010. Not only does she work full time with WEI, but she volunteers at a vet clinic in the community.

Rachael Wiedmeier is a junior at Stevens High School. She loves birds, and has developed a tremendous liking for parrots. Her singing and dancing keeps the staff in laughter and smiles.

John Abernathy got his Associates of Science degree in Zoo Animal Technology at the Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida. We are so lucky to have him on our staff! John’s warm smile, sunny personality, and the fact that he LIKES cold weather and snow shoveling are great assets to the whole operation. His long-term goals include working with big cats.

Ashley Hrabe is a sophomore at SD State University. She is considering studying marine biology, or another specialized area of ecology. She is our newest eagle handler for the summer bird shows.
